In 2023, BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance® was endorsed by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development making it one of the first science and industry alliances to be endorsed. The UN Ocean Decade aims to support efforts to reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health and gather ocean stakeholders worldwide to create improved conditions for sustainable ocean development.

This endorsement is an incredible recognition of the work being carried out by the Alliance. BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance® aims to take science with us as we venture beneath the seas to work for a sustainable future, which aligns with the Ocean Decade vision and mission statements.
The UN Ocean Decade is underpinned by 7 Ocean Decade Outcomes that describe the Ocean We Want:

BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance® addresses each of the 7 Ocean Decade Outcomes throughout its various projects that facilitate the identification of critical ocean knowledge. The Alliance builds on the blend of Subsea7’s global deep-water reach, where scientific value can be derived from existing datasets or by adding value to routine operations, and the breadth of science of the NOC.
Since 2021, BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance® has made significant progress by integrating sensors into deep water ROVs, developing projects to monitor submarine canyons, and generating information on benthic species abundance and diversity from subsea images among other projects.
This highly regarded endorsement demonstrates the valuable scientific work that can evolve from science and industry collaborations like BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance®. The Alliance is providing a better understanding of the world’s oceans and seas for a sustainable marine future and opening access to scientific research globally. Both Subsea7 and the NOC are proud to have received this endorsement from the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
