BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance®’s globe-spanning academic and industry partnership research has been named the International Marine Contractors Association’s (IMCA) Sustainability Project of the Year.

The UK’s National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and Subsea7 partnered to establish BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance® and help bridge the gap between industry and science to support sustainable research and development.

The NOC’s world-class expertise in research and technology development, combined with Subsea7’s innovative fleet of vessels and vehicles, has reached areas of the deep ocean that are rarely available to scientists.

Liz James, Group Environmental Director at Subsea7, a global leader in the delivery of offshore projects for the energy sector, received the award alongside Phil Bishop, Head of Commercial Development at NOC during the opening day of the IMCA Global Summit in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance® is endorsed by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, gathering ocean data valuable to science to better understand our oceans, delivering the science we need for the ocean we want.

One example of how the partnership supports the international scientific community is through its Eyes in the Ocean (EITO) project. It uses industry-leading technology to obtain footage of marine life that inhabit remote locations and unexplored ocean depths.

Using Subsea7’s unique operational vessels’ access to the ocean, EITO enables the close monitoring of different ocean characteristics for analysis by scientists at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC). It is hoped that the project will make exciting and noteworthy discoveries and has already captured incredible images of remora fish ‘riding’ on sea turtles.
